What is IP Enclosure ?
The IP rating (Ingress Protection Marking) is defined by the IEC 60529 standard and primarily describes the protection provided by electrical equipment enclosures against solid foreign objects and liquids (water). Jushun’s waterproof electrical enclosures and dustproof enclosures are all IP-rated enclosures.
The format is generally IPXY, with the protection level determined by the following two numbers (X and Y). X(0-6) represents protection against solid objects like dust and particles, while Y(0-8-9K) represents protection against water and moisture. The larger the number, the stronger the protection capability of the shell.

Our outdoor IP enclosures are often used to protect outdoor lighting and traffic control systems, while weatherproof enclosures are also used in the solar power and renewable energy industries. Furthermore, our industrial IP enclosures are ideal for industrial automation and machinery, protecting sensitive equipment in security and surveillance systems, and also play a vital role in food and pharmaceutical production.
FAQs
What’s the difference between IP66 and IP67 enclosures?
The difference between the last two numbers clearly indicates that IP67 offers greater protection than IP66. While both are suitable for outdoor use, IP66 enclosures are typically used in a slightly harsh environments, while IP66 enclosures are typically used in a worse wet or submersible environments. This is because IP66 stands for “dust-tight; protected against strong water jets/heavy seas,” while IP67 stands for “dust-tight; protected against immersion in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes.” Therefore, IP67 is often used as protection for marine equipment, underground junction boxes, and heavy-duty outdoor machinery.
Can IP65 enclosures be used outdoors?
This is a valuable question. IP65 enclosures can be used indoors or outdoors. IP65 stands for Dust-tight; protected against low-pressure water jets. Therefore, you’ll often see IP65 enclosures in applications where waterproofing isn’t a top priority, such as outdoor lighting enclosures, solar equipment boxes, and HVAC controls.
Are stainless steel IP enclosures better than plastic ones?
There is only the most suitable one, not the better one.If you need durability, weather resistance, and long-term outdoor performance, stainless steel IP enclosures are better. If you need lightweight, affordable, and indoor-friendly enclosures, plastic enclosures are a practical choice. It depends on which of their advantages you value more.
What IP rating do I need for outdoor electrical equipment?
For most outdoor electrical equipment, IP65 or higher is recommended. If your installation is exposed to heavy rain, direct jets of water, or possible immersion, choose IP66 or IP67 enclosures for reliable protection. Of course, these are just our suggestions, and you still have to consider the overall conditions.
